About the Artist

Artist Statement

Angela Humes is a first generation American artist of Palestinian decent, making functional black and white porcelain ceramic art. All of her wheel thrown pieces are hand made and each wears a free-hand drawn Sgraffito design inspired by her heritage. Every piece is unique as she does not repeat the same pattern twice.

“I graduated from Pratt Institute with my BFA in photography and a concentration in ceramics in 2012. My work reflects my Palestinian heritage. Growing up, I saw so much vibrant artwork of my culture from visiting the houses of my family. I remember looking at all the lavish decorations painting every surface of their homes, the hand woven rugs, tapestries, sculptures, paintings, lanterns, ceramic art and even their clothing filled with intricate design and pattern. It must have sunk in as it inherently and intuitively comes out in my artwork, collected by my ancestors, absorbed through childhood, and turned into its own unique being at this point in time threw my hands. I throw all my forms on the wheel using porcelain. I then hand draw the patterns onto the form of each vessel.”
